This piece is a simple ceramic vessel that we thought would be perfect for a vigil lamp. The glaze color is a plum, pinkish red color. This piece can also be used as a cup/dish as it is food safe!
The votive lamp used in our iconostasis should be of a traditional type that uses oil and not an electric bulb. It should be perpetual, meaning that it is kept lit day and night. Such a lamp is an offering of honor to Christ, the Theotokos, and the Saints depicted in our icons. The maintenance of this lamp replenishing its oil, trimming the wick regularly— becomes a type of penitent prayer. Being attentive to our votive lamp brings to mind God and the Saints, and thus becomes a part of the unceasing prayer commended to us by the Apostle Paul: "Pray constantly" (I Thessalonians 5:16, RSV).
